What’s your most memorable Spring Training moment?

It was 2001 and Pedro Martinez was making first start in Spring after some injury. It was gainst Montreal and I managed to be in the standing room behind the first section of lower seats behind the plate at City of Palms Park. That section is only about 10 rows up from the field and just high enough to see over the umpire’s shoulder.

Nobody knew what to expect but Pedro came in throwing all his pitches. From that vantage point it was like being the Unpire and getting a great feel for the movement on the fastball, tremendous break on his curve and drop on the change-up. Only in Spring Training could you get that view.

Then to top it off, later in the came, a Red Sox hit a fairly deep fly ball to right field with a runner on third. Vladimir Guererro caught it and threw a rope to home stunning the rookie runner at home.

Both examples of natural talent on display in the halcyon of warm southwest Florida sunshine.

My most memorable Spring Training moment was this year (2009). My parents took me down to Florida and then surprised me with taking me to Spring Training! I was so happy that I started crying! The first day we were there wasn’t my favorite, but there were some highlights! My mom got Jon Lester’s autograph, and we got to watch Varitek and Dusty doing running exercises. But the next day (Wednesday) was my favorite! I got the best spot for autographs, and when Terry Francona came up to me and gave me his autograph, I was so happy that I thanked him like crazy, and started crying again! Then Dustin Pedroia was next out, and I got his autograph and he’s one of my favorite players! I just had so much fun watching them practice because you never get that thrill until you see them in real life instead of on TV! I get to go to my first game this year, and I know that it won’t be my last!

    Playoff Memory
This was our story and was puplished in the Boston Globe

Opinion Paid the shirt off my back for tickets This is the most unbelievable story I have ever heard, only Greg and I lived it! When Greg got home from work yesterday, after the initial greeting he said, “Want to ride to Boston?” I thought he had bought tickets however, he said no, but he truly wanted to see if we could get some there. He thought we should go on a little adventure and we all know I was ready in 5 minutes but sure that we would not get them and we would be back here watching the game by 9. Off we go, adorned in Red Sox garb. Parked in North Station, took the subway to Fenway, and there we were. Greg had made a little sign ~ NEED TWO TICKETS ~ and there we stood. One gentleman came up and he had tickets for $800.00 each. We, of course, couldn’t do those. So again, there we stood. At about 8 a gentleman came up to us and asked where we were from and were we hard core Sox fans. Greg stated he could name the players from 1967 and where they played. He did that and then said to this wonderful gentleman, do you have tickets to sell? His reply: No, I have tickets that I will GIVE to you for your Red Sox clothes that you have on. We were both stunned, asked a few questions, he showed us the tickets and it just happened. Greg took off his jacket, his hat and yes, I no longer have my Lugo shirt. As I went to hand him my shirt ~ he gave us the tickets. In a flurry of Thank-you’s off we went to the game. When we arrived at the gate I said to Greg, “okay, you go first and if we have been scammed I am just going to be right here crying.” WHALA, in we went and the rest is history. There we were, Gate D, Sec 11 Row 12 Seats 1 and 2!!!!!!!!!!!!! As I sit here, looking at the tickets, knowing we didn’t get home until 1:38, looking at the program, I am still waiting to wake up from the dream. It was fantastic, awesome, incredible and I still can’t believe it all happens. A world series game! I took my camera and have pics. If anyone was watching the game (like who wasn’t?) we were the ones WITHOUT Red Sox garb. LOL Does anyone know who gave us the tickets it is driving me crazy Have a great day!
